Demolition starts on Queensgate Mall

The demolition of part of Queensgate mall and carpark including the cinema complex has begun this morning.

Demolition work will be between 7.30am and 9pm Monday to Saturday and 9am-4pm Sundays.

Hutt City Council say the process will take about two months.

This part of Queensgate was badly damaged during the 7.8 Kaikoura earthquake, and therefore not safe for the public anymore.

Neighbouring businesses New World supermarket and the restaurant and a conference area of The Angus Inn hotel are closed for safety.

It is likely New World will open before christmas, but the Angus Inn Hotel is likely to be closed till early February.

People passing by the area need to be aware of any debris or dust flying as the building comes down.

Many shops within the Mall are still open, as the damaged part of the mall was a seperate building.
