Extreme wind and rain is set to hit Wellington today, likely to cause surface flooding, wind damage, and possible power outages, along with potential ferry & flight delays.

Trolley buses have been taken off the roads to avoid damage.

From this afternoon until tomorrow morning, wind gusts will be up to 160kph in exposed places, and 150kph in the Wairarapa, along with rain, which is said to become ‘horizontal rain.’

Wellingtonians are recommended to secure any loose items outside, such as light furniture, rubbish bins, trampolines, and toys. Clearing nearby gutters can help to reduce the risk of surface flooding.

The largest wind gust recorded in Wellington was 202kph in a 2013 southerly storm.
