A great walk for scenic landscape views is Te Ara Tirohanga, also known as the Remutaka Trig Track.
You’ll find this track via a car park just below the summit of Remutaka Hill Road. It is located on the right hand side if driving from Upper Hutt towards the Wairarapa.
The walk starts through covered bushes and scrubs, going uphill in a zig-zag layout so it’s not too intense.
It takes around 30 minutes to reach the summit. Along the way the track the bush opens up and you start to see sweeping views over the Remutaka Ranges, over the road and out to the Tararua Ranges.
As you reach the top you will find a bench seat, as well as the trig structure. The top boasts sweeping landscape views, as far as out to the South Island on a clear day, plus views over the Wairarapa.
If you are heading up around sunset, remember to take a torch for the walk back down. Also be aware it can be quite chilly if windy. Wear sturdy shoes as the path gets quite rocky near the top.
The Remutaka Trig track was renamed Te Ara Tirohanga in May 2012 by local Iwi. The literal translation of the name is “The view that improves as you climb the ascending pathway”
